What to know about dementia care
Dementia care should adapt to the person’s history, routines, communication and changing needs. A CQC rating is useful evidence, but it does not by itself show whether a home is the right environment for a particular person.

Dementia and Alzheimer's care homes
Dementia care homes provide personal care and day-to-day support in an environment intended to meet the needs of people living with dementia. Some are residential homes; others also provide 24-hour nursing care for people with clinical needs.
A dementia service label is only a starting point. Confirm that the home can support the person’s diagnosis, communication, mobility, distress, medicines and likely future needs before relying on a directory category.
Questions to ask a dementia care home
- What dementia-specific training do permanent and agency staff receive?
- Can the home support the person if their mobility, eating or behaviour changes?
- How are routines, life history and communication preferences recorded?
- How does the environment support orientation, calm and safe independence?
- When would the home ask a resident to move because needs have increased?
- How are families involved in care planning and reviews?
NHS guidance recommends getting a needs assessment, checking the latest CQC report and visiting shortlisted homes. Residential homes provide personal care; nursing homes also provide 24-hour care from qualified nurses.
